Just about every recent album I've loved, I've hated at first. I don't get it. All of these albums are sneaking up on me. The two most recently I just can't stop listening to being The Islands- Arm's Way and the Mountain Goats- Heretic Pride.
I can honestly say after listening to these albums how disappointing it was at first. Two bands I could count on. Then to listen to bands that have felt like they really changed for the worse. All of the things I liked about the previous albums I had listened to trampled on. Rythems that were entirely unfamiliar. Lyrics that felt lacking at first listen.
I kept coming back though for a track or two. Then I burnt the islands album for my car, and I haven't stopped listening since. Arm's way is long, at I think around the 70 minute mark, and seriously took time to digest. It's an amazing album. Entirely morose in it's lyrics, it's a sweeping album that you can get lost in so easily. Heretic Pride, like any mountain goats album is a lyric fest, but the upped production ruined the personal side of it that I loved before... then I listened to it again, and it settled in how not personal this album is. It's a collection of awesome stories and characters, with sound the stories rightfully deserve. I walked up to friend's and outright complained how disappointed I was, I am the biggest hypocrite right now.
Other albums that have snuck up on me: Swan Lake- Beast Moans, Collections of Colonies of Bees- Birds, Husky Rescue- Ghosts Not Real, and Panda Bear- Person Pitch
I guess most of it is rather experimental, sometimes ugly sounding, but I'm used to being spoon-fed my music. I can't expect things as nice as Beirut, Liam Finn or Fionn Regan all the time, or as ridiculously revolution raising as Gogol Bordello, but man is it nice to have an album sneak up on you. Something you suddenly realize may have just topped your favorite album of all time.
Just something I had to say, I mean I have more here I could list as sneaky music, but I think I'm done typing, and I'm just gonna go back to listening.
